The suburb is located 14 km south of Athens, directly by the sea. In ancient times the area of Glyfada was called "Aixoni" and was one of the municipalities of Athens. The name is relatively recent and comes from the wells in the area whose water was brackish, hence Glyph. Glyfada has an area of 25.37 km² with 87 305 inhabitants (2011 census), and is considered the most glamorous of all the southern suburbs of Athens.
