The Ministry of National Defense is located in the "Pentagon" at 227-231 Mesogeion Avenue in Athens between the areas of Papagou and Holargos. The Ministry was founded in 1950 under the influence of American advisors and has as its main responsibility the command of the country's armed forces. According to the Constitution, it is subordinate to the President of the Hellenic Republic.
