About

Kalfayan Galleries presents Sasha Streshna's solo exhibition with
title "Devon Loch". The artist presents a new series of oil paintings that continue her research into the tradition of historical Western painting, focusing mainly on representations of violence, repression and power.

For this new series, Streshna draws material from the illustrations of Soviet history textbooks. Concealing the elements that would allow the viewer to recognize the depicted event, Streshna transforms the images into a painterly language with suggestive contours and a color palette without seemingly high intensities. It thus deals with stories of rebellions, disobedience and ruptures
more as vague memories and mental burdens than as concrete events.

Devon Loch, after whom the exhibition takes its name, was a famous British racehorse. In the 1956 UK Grand National, Devon Loch, just before finishing first, stopped
and he lay motionless on the ground, letting the other horses pass him. The expression to do a Devon Loch has since denoted in Britain the unexpected failure in the face of the possibility of victory. Although at first
level, this title alludes to an inability of both painting and political action to understand and transform the world, yet it implies that disobedience is always one of the highest expressions of self-determination and free will. The vague memory is at the same time an open possibility for the future.
