Periodical exhibition "Konstantinos Volanakis - The painter of the sea returns to Piraeus"

About

The Maritime Museum of Greece presents the exhibition entitled "Konstantinos Volanakis - The painter of the sea returns to Piraeus".

The exhibition is expected to be yet another important reference to the work of the great Greek mariner. 52 paintings from the collection of the Aikaterinis Laskaridis Foundation, which is the largest collection of works by the leading Greek sea painter, will be presented. The public will also have the opportunity to admire important historical compositions, such as "The Battle of Salamis, 1882", from the collection of the Naval Headquarters, "The Departure of Ares, 1894" and "The Arrival of Princess Sophia in Faliro 1889-1890 " from the collection of Evangelos and Katigos Angelakou, as well as the emblematic work "The port of Piraeus from the royal pier, 1886", from the collection of the Municipality of Piraeus. The cycle of visual historical narratives is completed with the two magnificent oil paintings by Kostantinos Volanakis from the permanent collection of the Naval Museum of Greece, which depict naval war events of the Revolution of 1821: "The Burning of the Turkish ship at Eresos" and "The Battle of Navarino". .

Guided tours and educational programs for adults and children will be organized during the exhibition.

At the same time, inside the exhibition, visitors will have access to the online art gallery of the Aikaterinis Laskaridis Foundation digitalgallery.laskaridisfoundation.org which includes images of the paintings in high resolution, commentary from an art historian, and a bibliography. But the most important thing is that it offers the possibility of audio navigation for the visually impaired.

The exhibition is curated by art historian and independent visual consultant Maria Migadis.

As the curator of the exhibition states in her text: "As if it were his only love, Kostantinos Volanakis turned the focus of his creative journey (1856-1907) to the depiction of the sea. Countless publications and scientific analyzes have honored the work of Constantinos Volanakis in recent decades. He may have passed away unrecognized, like many geniuses of the world's art history, but his posthumous fame was blessed to be correspondingly magnificent. [...] Volanakis repeats but also transforms always his favorite subjects. The historical narratives, the beautiful harbors, the peaceful coasts, the sometimes calm and sometimes turbulent waters as well as the atmospheric night landscapes primarily weave the fabric of the iconography that established Volanakis as the father of Greek seascapes."
