Neapolis "looks of carelessness and youth" 1855-1965

About

The neighborhood of Neapolis is reconstituted as a center of osmosis of ideas and people through a complex visual and historical narrative.

The Hellenic American Union, in pursuit of the permanent goal of highlighting the historical neighborhoods of Athens, presents in collaboration with the Association of Athens a historical and visual exhibition about the neighborhood of Neapolis, edited by the journalist Nikos Vatopoulos and the art historian Iris Kritikou. Deepening the research and approaching with a modern eye the legacy of the historic neighborhood, of which the Hellenic American Union itself is a part, the exhibition Neapolis, "looks of Amerimnesia and youth", opens on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., at the Galleries her.

Starting from the characterization of Neapolis by the writer Costas Athanatos (1896-1966), two testimonies are selected in the exhibition: The photographic stock from the 19th and 20th centuries with the visual representation of the region's heritage through the works of contemporary Greek artists. Neapolis emerges as the cradle of the then new city, behind the Trilogy towards Lycabettus and Strefi, a district that began as a "suburb" in the 19th century to evolve as an Athenian place of intellectual movements, a center of intellectuals, artists and students . This special osmosis of ideas and people was and is to this day the most charming aspect of Neapolis, the oldest of the "new" districts of Athens. Neapolis is presented, according to its curators, "as a spiritual cradle, pulsating with life in all its aspects. Recreating the atmosphere of the cafes and salons, everyday life and its anonymous protagonists, on the canvas of the simple and effortless rhythm of the neighborhood with its neoclassical houses and courtyards, bookstores and bookbinders, housewives and prostitutes, students and the employees, the exhibition also attempts to highlight the spiritual figures of Neapolis - from Georgios Drosini to Kostis Palamas and from Giannoulis Halepas to Grigorios Xenopoulos and Georgios Souris".

The exhibition re-examines these aspects of Neapolis seven years after the exhibition #NeapolisAthina: then and now (2017), organized by the Hellenic American Union, curated by Louiza Karapidakis.
