The exhibition "Steven Shearer: Sleep, Death's Own Brother" is presented at the Giorgos Oikonomou Collection.

Exhibition "Steven Shearer: Sleep, Death's Own Brother"

The exhibition takes as its starting point the work Sleep II (2015), a monumental collage made up of thousands of images that the artist has found in his internet searches, all jpegs, representing people sleeping. The work, an impressive feat of balancing color, scale, composition and subject matter, is an expansive mosaic that captures a wide range of sleep states, from rest and tranquility, comic lightness to ecstasy and the utterly macabre.

The title of the exhibition comes from a verse from the epic poem Theogony by the 8th century BC poet. Hesiod ("Harmful Night, shrouded in a veil of mist, bears in her arms Sleep, brother of Death"), and revolves around this uneasy proximity between sleep and death, a recurring idea in Shearer's work.

Vancouver-based Steven Shearer rose to prominence in the early 2000s with a series of works driven by his personal attraction to 70s youth culture and the proletarian aesthetic of the international metal underground, which the artist continues to he enlists as sources for pictorial references, however liberating they may be in relation to the canon of art history.
