Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

The much-anticipated creation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation was delivered in 2017. Designed by the award-winning architect, Renzo Piano "The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center" (SNFCC) was built on the old racecourse plot in the Delta Faliron and therein lies the National Library, the National Opera, and the Stavros Niarchos Park.

Access to the center is extremely easy. Ideally, it can be done with the shuttle bus (free transfer) which starts from the end of Syntagma Square. If you use the bus, get off at the stop "Onasseio" coming from the center of Athens, or at the stop "Eugenideio" if you are coming from Glyfada, or at the stop "Tzitzifies" if you are coming from Piraeus. If you choose to drive, there is a special parking area, which temporarily works without charge.

At the main entrance, the first thing a visitor will see is the silver cup of Spyros Louis, which was awarded to him at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Continuing on to the National Opera to the right, on the left is the National Library - while in between there is the outdoor space "Agora".

The building housing the Opera has an area of 28,000 sqm and is one of the most modern worldwide. It combines aesthetics and superior acoustics with the latest technological features. Also, there is a smaller Alternative Stage, with a capacity 400 persons for smaller events.

The National Library has an area of 22,000 sqm and gives the ability to house all the existing collections of books, which until now were located in 3 separate buildings because of the lack of space. The first thing one sees while facing the library is the "Tower Of Books". Located in the reception hall, it has a height of 18 meters and reaches the highest point of the building.

One of the core values of the Cultural Center is environmental sustainability. Its particular characteristic is the green roof full of plants, which spans the National Library and the National Opera and follows on from the Stavros Niarchos Park to the photovoltaic canopy - which produces enough energy to cover the needs of both buildings.

Getting to the center point of the structure, which is also the highest spot, you can enjoy a coffee along with a wonderful view of the green roof spanning as far as the port of Piraeus.

Entrance to the Cultural Center is free. Furthermore, there are monthly events and a variety of classes for adults and children which are also provided for free of charge. Those wishing to become members are invited to give a donation of their choosing.

Visitors interested in a guided tour can come from Monday to Sunday at 10:00 (for the Cultural Center only, for the park there are other times and days). Moreover, the Cultural Center offers bike rentals for adults and for children in order to have the opportunity to visit the entire complex and the surrounding parts quickly and economically.
