The Breeder art space presents the solo exhibition of visual artist Sofia Stevi entitled "When We Start to Understand the World".

In the text of Giacomo Mercuriali (Athens 2023) it is mentioned among others:

"[...] The exhibition is structured around a monumental trilogy of paintings on fabric, immersing viewers in an intimate adventure of introspection and discovery.

This journey is exuberant and contemplative: expect an unrelenting palette of reds and greens, pinks and yellows, blues and oranges, all part of a continuous and vibrant vortex that evolves to take the form of a fluffy cloud, misty water vapor, a babbling brook or a rocky slope. These vibrant colors springing from Stevi's inventive brushwork captivate the viewer's eye with charm and honesty, reminiscent of landscapes methodically set up by a skillful director. [...]

In fact, one of the most striking features of the artist's technique is the construction of multiple pictorial layers that defy common rules of perception and representation. [...]

For Stevi's poetics, the title of this exhibition is a deliberate challenge to the raw materialism sought by the dark protagonists of When We Cease to Understand the World, a recent book by Chilean author Benjamin Labatut. [...]

One can direct one's gaze to the most distant and silent stars of the universe, or to the infinite and absurd space that separates the tiniest particles of nature. However, there are realities that remain to be revealed, universes infinitely vast and limitless, even in those moments that make up real or imagined everyday life, realities that only art has the power to highlight and offer for contemplation. The enigma of touch and smell, the wonder of sight and taste, the revelation of hearing and our capacity to imagine them all: these little sensory revelations are the real subject of this exhibition.

To structure her images, Stevi gathers forms and themes that either come from her previous works, or converse with the works of the Great Masters of painting, springing from her mobile camera and from the inexhaustible gold mine of content offered by the internet. [...]
