About

The Byzantine and Christian Museum presents a periodic exhibition dedicated to the religious work of Polycleitos Regos.

Polykleitos Regos (Naxos 1903 - Thessaloniki 1984) studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Athens (1920-1926), continued his studies in Paris (1930-1934) and returned to Thessaloniki where he lived until the end of his life. An artist with a rich secular work, he also belongs to the group of painters who brought back the historical example of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine tradition in religious painting. Regos, fully respecting the iconographic tradition of Byzantine art and working with traditional techniques and materials, such as egg tempera, at the same time renewed iconography with a personal style that spoke to the dominant European currents of his time.

He painted monuments with a special historical weight, such as Agios Dimitrios of Thessaloniki, attempting to mark a continuity in the historical tradition of Byzantine art.

The exhibition attempts to present as wide as possible the entirety of his religious painting, exhibiting works from all his painting periods and in all the techniques he used: frescoes, portable icons, models of church orders, engravings, works in egg tempera.

The exhibition presents 120 works, as well as photographic and archival material that sheds light on Rego's iconographic work.
