About

On December 14, 2023, the periodic exhibition "Chaeronea, August 2, 338 BC: A day that changed the world" will begin at the Museum of Cycladic Art (Megaro Stathatou), with a duration until March 31, 2024.

It is a landmark exhibition about the historic day that brought Alexander the Great, one of the great protagonists of world history, to the political scene. The exhibition is part of the new series of archaeological exhibitions "History of People" of the Museum of Cycladic Art and will be presented at Megaro Stathatos, under the supervision of Drs Panagiotis Iosif and Ioannis Fappa, curators of the Museum.

The exhibition highlights the importance of the Battle of Chaeronea for the transition from the classical to the Hellenistic period. The battle established the Macedonians definitively as the dominant power in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean under the reign of Philip. On this day, the then eighteen-year-old Prince Alexander makes a powerful appearance on the political and military scene, decisively contributing to the defeat of the Holy Company of Thebes.

The exhibition allows us to archaeologically "touch" the great king, as never before and nowhere else in the place and time. Through approximately 260 objects, which will come from 25 Greek museums, 2 foreign museums and 4 private collections, the exhibition will examine the two worlds that collided, creating the yeast for the new Hellenistic world born in the aftermath of the historic battle, changing the course of history.

The exhibition includes 240 antiquities and historical documents from 27 Museums and Institutions of the interior and four private collections, many of which are exhibited for the first time.
Also on display are two marble busts from the Chiaramonti Museum in the Vatican, while a large "Unexpected Visitor" is Andy Warhol's work "Alexander the Great" (1981) from MOMus - Museum of Contemporary Art.

Entitled "People's Stories", the Museum of Cycladic Art is launching in 2023 a new series of archaeological exhibitions that will focus on telling important events in human history through objects that will not only be chosen for their aesthetic value but mainly for their importance in storytelling of a specific historical event that marked Man. The new exhibitions will not be limited to space and time, but will be part of timelessness. Through events such as the battle of Chaeronea, they will approach Man, his role in historical events and his emotions. Like all the Museum's periodic exhibitions, the new exhibitions will be accompanied by a fully documented scientific catalog and educational program.

The specific archaeological exhibition will be framed by an international scientific conference with the participation of Greek and foreign experts, who will present the results of their research on the battle of Chaeronea and human activity in the area throughout the period of antiquity. The proceedings of the conference will be published in an academic publication, strengthening the research work of the Museum.
