About

The Breeder gallery presents the first solo exhibition of Panos Profitis entitled Comedy/Comoedia. The exhibition is an organic continuation of the in situ installation which Prophet presented in the atrium of the gallery during the summer.

Both the title and the structure of the exhibition draw inspiration from the universe of theater and narrative poetry, Dante's Divine Comedy, Aristophanes' work, but also from Gustave Dore's engravings, religious art, utopian philosophy (Tomas More , Lewis Mumford, Adorno) and the comic allusions of Brecht.

Starting from the basement of the gallery, the exhibition develops on three imaginal and conceptual levels utilizing the architecture of the building as a parable for metaphysical viewing in a scenographic manner. The visual narrative begins with an installation that refers to the chthonic element, the Underworld to then explore the earthly in present time, a level that in Dante's approach is also purgatory. At the third level of action, works that are adjacent to the supernatural element are the protagonists. These creatures belong to a utopian sphere that has been fractured and its fragments intrude into the urban fabric that embraces the gallery, a contradictory environment that also breaks with the works themselves. In the exhibition all three levels merge into one another, allowing each individual work to participate in all situations simultaneously and each viewer to create their own personal journey towards deification.

The Prophet's works, among others, deal with issues surrounding the role of the creator, the internal conflict, the acting attitude (institutional or individual) that can go beyond the limits of the initiatory art and enter the spectrum of speech, the ridiculous, the sarcasm and its redemptive nature.
