Exhibition "Michal Oikonomou. The alchemy of painting"

About

One hundred and sixteen works by the leading painter Michal Oikonomou, who was born in 1884 in Piraeus and died in Dromokaiteio in 1933 at the age of 49, complete the exhibition entitled "Michal Oikonomou. The alchemy of painting".

These are imaginative works which directly reflect the deep desire of the painter himself, who emphasized: "I want to give feeling, as much feeling as I can...". Thus, through his paintings such as "The Red Mountain", "The Citadel", "Church with Five Cypresses", "Fishing House", "Hydra" to "The Dreaming House", "Martigues", "House with Red awning", "After the rain", intense sensations emerge.

The curator of the exhibition, dr. Aphrodite Curia states: "The themes of the Economist are simple, always taken from nature. Waterside houses, chapels, old bridges and mills, arched streets, old olive trees, cypress trees, seas, boats. Buildings such as trees, solid shaped and spaced, testify in many paintings that the painter has a strong sense of form, a sculptural perception – one might say – of volume and form in space. The clarity in the organization of volumes, levels as well as in the articulation of space is a constitutive feature of most of the works of the artist's first period".

The leading painter Michalis Oikonomou, in addition to the teachings of the schools, mastered his own landscape painting. His rural research (light-color-line), captures in the most expressive way, not only the physiology of the soil, but also the feeling of the climate. This sensory perception of his with the mysterious liquid atmosphere, the absolute harmony between light and ether, light and fog, completes his autonomous visual expression. Thus, his landscapes, sometimes as a natural space and sometimes as a projection of "living" buildings, with the autonomy of the peculiar touch and the power of the design rank him as one of the most important European painters.
